Overview

Carried is a tiny product with real engineering inside: pick a book, write the line you would underline, stamp it with your name, and share a printable catalog-card link, with no accounts anywhere. Lines land on book pages and the home ticker live (6-8 second polling), slugs are cut deterministically from the line's own words plus a hash, and covers come from Open Library with an Internet Archive fallback and find-the-book links to Open Library, Internet Archive, Bookshop.org, and WorldCat, with no API keys anywhere. Underline voting uses anonymous device IDs stored as unique-voter sets, and the app runs in two storage modes: Upstash Redis, or an offline mode where the base64url link itself carries the line. OG cards render through satori, and the shareable card draws client-side on canvas.

Inside the Project

What it does, how it works, and what it ships.

share

Zero-Friction Sharing

No sign-up, no API keys: deterministic slugs from the line itself, shareable OG card images via satori, and a 1080×1350 PNG card drawn client-side on canvas.

storage

Two Storage Modes

Global mode uses Upstash Redis; offline mode encodes the whole line into the link as base64url JSON, so the URL is the database. Legacy base64 links still resolve.

  • Live ticker and book pages via 6-8s polling
  • Underline voting with unique anonymous voter sets

Tested Small

Vitest covers the payload codec, search, and store validation; the repo includes 1,100 editorial seed lines and a documented virality playbook.
